Born Louis Leo Holtz on January 6, 1937, Holtz grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio, just up the Ohio River from his Follansbee, West Virginia, and birthplace. He graduated from East Liverpool High School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Kent State in 1959 and a master’s degree from Iowa in arts and education in 1961. In becoming the 31st manager in team history, he joined Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra and Dallas Green as the fourth skipper to wear both Yankee and New York Met uniforms. Torre served 12 Seasons as Manager of the Yankees (1996-2007). The team made the playoffs every year under his tenure. He led the Yankees to 6 World Series appearances during the 12-year span, winning 4 World Series Championships. In the fall of 2007, Torre was named Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
